Retina

The retina is like the film in a camera. When the focused light hits the retina, a picture is created and sent to the brain through the optic nerve, thus giving us vision.

Retina has two parts: The peripheral retina and central Macula. Macula being the central part is capable of producing sharp and clear image. These clear images enable us to read, write and do all fine work.

Many Retinal conditions are amenable to treatment by laser applications. Presently, technological advances in medicine has provided us intra vitreal injections which are useful in conditions where laser couldn't be applied and few more conditions too.

Common conditions where the above non surgical modalities find use include:

• Diabetic retinopathy
• Age related macular degeneration
• Retinal vascular disorders
• Retinal breaks
• Retinopathy of prematurity

Vitreoretinal surgery refers to any operation to treat eye problems involving the retina, macula, and vitreous fluid. These include retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane and complications related to diabetic retinopathy.

In addition to its peculiar set of disorders, general diseases of the body frequently affect this part, chief among them are:

1 Scarring and distortions
2 Myopic degenerations
3 Degenerations and dystrophies
4 Injury related scarrings
5 Retinoblastoma- cancer of the eye
